The Elephant In the Room

Thursday, January 09, 2014
...Is me. The crying, sobbing, bawling, mother elephant who emotionally breaks at the socially incompetent sociopath showing human emotions at his best friends wedding. I'm a total mess.

D'awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwh. I am promptly going to cry into my pillow out of sheer happiness now. *weeps some more*

So much for mocking grown men crying.

Catch you on the Flippy Flip

I thought the Christmas Party Sex Trap couldn't get any better. Sue me, Mindy. Sue me.

I'll pretend this is lunch I'm having.

Or you know. You could wear a bathing suit with a skirt.

And you know...enjoy the hot tub.

Wait, wait! How many sit-ups are that? Are you counting right?

And that ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.

Yes okay. I get it I'm fat. Now shut up.

Oh God, I've to wear a bikini. In January.

[When Mindy wears a sequined sweater - which btw do NOT flick off when you sweat - to the gym with Danny] What is that??

I swear I'm not looking. I'm a gentleman.

That is the most moist and succulent coffee cake I've ever laid my eyes on. (Don't worry Mindy, this happens to me whenever I lay my eyes on any form of chocolate or cake. I feel you girl, I feel you.)

[When Danny remarks on her nether regions after seeing her naked twice]

On this note I would like to compose a letter to FoxTV:

Dear FoxTV,

Repeat after me and a million other first world women for whom The Mindy Project was intended, I will not cancel this show. I will not cancel this show.

You may not have noticed but this developed and standard place we lovingly refer to as the "first world" is exhausted from shows that are filled with witty remarks, edge-of-the-seat plotlines, multitude of cliffhangers and insanely gorgeous individuals who exist on the ratio of one to a million in comparison to normal people. While some of us love to dream about our flawless selves, the majority of us would like to embrace our flawed selves (hell, because that is what we have to live with) and the Mindy Project is the sole show on television that reassures us that despite the shady plotlines and impossible situations, a little body fat and inherent failure of having a love life akin to an Abercombie & Fitch ad isn't the end of the world, as is portrayed in most other television series.

So please, have mercy on your viewers, screw the ratings and save this gem of a show, because everyone could do with a little Mindy in their lives. And because we no longer have the Office to satisfy our cravings of snappy one-liners. AND, we could do less with crime television series like Bones, cause let's face it, how many women can possibly relate to a character like that?

However, my elementary school teacher often said that the maturest way of explaining is not the most effective way. So please repeat after me, if this long rant of mine failed to penetrate into your souls, that I will not cancel the Mindy Project. I will not cancel the Mindy Project. I will not cancel the Mindy Project. I will not cancel the Mindy Project. Here's hoping this miniature hyponsis session has been effective.

Sincerely,
An avid viewer (clearly) of the Mindy Project.

A study against blue

Sunday, January 05, 2014

Sherlock: Text me the details, I'll be in touch by the end of the day
Palace Official: You really think you'll have news by then?
Sherlock: No, I think I'll have the photographs.
Palace Official: One could only hope that you're as good as you seem to think.
Sherlock: I'll need some equipment of course.
Mycroft: Anything you require. I'll have it sent over -
Sherlock: Can I have a box of matches?
Palace Official: I'm sorry?
Sherlock: Or your cigarette lighter? Either will do.
Palace Official: I don't smoke.
Sherlock: No, I know you don't but your employer does.
Palace Official: We have a kept a lot of people successfully in the dark about this little fact Mr. Holmes.
Sherlock: I'm not the Commonwealth.
John: And that's as modest as she gets. Pleasure to meet you.
Sherlock: Latersssssss.

[Before meeting Irene Adler]
John: Are we here?
Sherlock: We're two streets away. But this'll do.
John: For what?
Sherlock: Punch me in the face.
John: Punch you?
Sherlock: Yes, punch me in the face. Didn't you hear me?
John: I always hear punch me in the face when you're speaking but its usually subtext.
Sherlock: Oh for God's sakes!

Sherlock: If I wanted to look at naked women I'd borrow John's laptop.
John: You do borrow my laptop.
Sherlock: I confiscate it.

John: We should call the police.
Sherlock: Yes.
[fires four shots into the air]
Sherlock: On their way.
John: For God's sake!
Sherlock: Oh, shut up. It's quick.

Sherlock: [reluctantly impressed] Oh, you're rather good.
Irene Adler: [returning the compliment] You're not so bad.
[intense eye gazing ensues]
John: Hamish.
[startled looks from Irene and Sherlock]
John: John Hamish Watson. Just if you are looking for baby names.

Sherlock: Dominatrix...
Mycroft: Don't be alarmed. It's to do with sex.
Sherlock: Sex doesn't alarm me.
Mycroft: How would you know?

Honestly, this show should just release its script as a book. It's so witty it makes me cry tears of joy. Rest assured it would reside well loved on my bookshelf. Ahem, this is a cue for you Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.

The latest mixes I've been obsessing over since exam sessions started. You will realize very quickly that I am obsessed with 8tracks.

Sick but not quite sick of the songs you have on repeat? Give these a shot. I like the fact that I can sing along to them and they still sound new to my ears

For the true JT fans out there

And if you feel like you want walk along the souqs and medinas of Morroco or feel nostalgic about Arabia

Or if you're a sucker for The Mindy Project like I am

I hope this satiates your needs for now.

Let's Suit Up. PLEASE.

Thursday, August 15, 2013
So I was in half-mind to convince you to watch the Mindy Project and rave a whole lot about it. But then I couldn't find the right filter to make the pictures look good and thus I kinda gave up on the idea. BUT THEN, I saw this amazing picture:

And now I have completely new agenda.

Suits is akin to yoga and Harvey Specter is so close to transcendental Buddhism .

And who doesn't want to approach Nirvana and levitate off the ground like Siddhartha Gautama near the sacred Bodai tree at the sauntering swag of Harvey Specter?

If that doesn't suit your boat, then at least picture yourself devouring the most delicious chocolate ice-cream that melts at the perfect time it touches your tongue. Not graphic enough? Then you need help. Or even better: Harvey Specter.

I know. I know. It's no breaking bad, it's not Californication. But if you are the kind of girl who swoons when One Direction croons "that's what makes you beautiful", then this is a just puh-fect.

For the Love of Blazers

Sunday, August 11, 2013

ASOS: "Invest in your working wardrobe with pieces from French Connection, Mango, Vera Moda and more. Gotta look cute when you're spreadsheeting!"

Cute, ASOS, cute.

Cause, ya know, we women with our fancy degrees all have to in some point in our careers, or perhaps for our whole lives, scroll through them dirty ol' spreadsheets.

All I can say is - Thank the Lord for macros. Although I do have my qualms with Microsoft Excel. PLEASE EXTEND THE LIMITS TO THE NUMBER OF ROWS WE CAN HAVE IN A SPREASHEET. It would make those who work with mapping softwares and have to calculate a bajillion points a little easier.

While ASOS attempts to lure you in with a "sale" which will undoubtedly cost you a $100 if not more, I waited years with patience and miraculously found the perfect black, long, boyfriend blazer that fits me like a glove. No, even that doesn't it do it justice. The fit is unbelievable.

And guess how much I got it for? $50 *moment of silence*

Beat that Zara Basic. You probably don't even have a decent fitting, good quality top for that price because you think you're too sexy for $50 blazers. But I do love some of your blazers - I just wish, like the rest of the world, that you don't go out of business and stop inspiring us to go ludicrously insane over the funkiest piece of material we would happily call a jacket. Please. I bitch because I love you.

I can't believe there's only a few weeks left before I go back to school. Not sure how I feel - a little happy that I'm going to finally be doing what I think I love and stop doing what I know I hate. I suppose from this point, it's going good, no?

Is Bridget Jones Still Relevant in 2013?

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Stylist.co.uk posed a similar question in 2011. Is she?

While I can't claim to be a chain-smoking, blubbering, fish-monger-like woman in her thirties reminiscing about single-hood, I can (quite shamefully) admit that I am a chain-swearing woman who blows her first world problems and post puberty weight gain out of proportions.

But Bridget Jones is like the modern Elizabath Bennet. Although, often post-Pride-and-Prejudice read, I can be prudish and declare that there cannot be another character like Elizabeth Bennet, which in a sense is true, I think it's somewhat safe to state that Bridget Jones does remind me of Elizabeth Bennet. Minus the grace and plus the alcoholic problems. Pretty sure though, if Elizabeth Bennet could have access to alcohol she would by any means try to get drunk to drown out her annoying mother's "raptures".

She is endearing, relatable(apparently this isn't a word) and most importantly flawed. One of those heroines who are well aware of the realities of romantic escapades, know that looks alone do not bewitch men and realize that everyone has a their fair share of baggage to distribute in the solid relationship. I wouldn't exactly say she is a timeless character, given that her personality would not be considered lady-like a few centuries ago, I can say that her oft crass behaviour - come on, more or less we are all gulty of swearing our lungs out to vent our first world frustrations out - is quite timeless (gah, I need to find a better expression for it) for the forseeable future.

With that being said, I'm wildy excited for Helen Fieldings new venture and eagerly await, I hope, the reincarnation of Mark Darcy probably at his sultriest. And crossing my fingers that he doesn't turn out anything like he was depicted in Bridget Jones 2.

What Traditional Serenades Consist Of

Monday, July 01, 2013

A topic that I can only conjure past midnight. Clearly the aftermath of the wedding is still ringing in my ears. And for this year, I think 2013 witnessed the release of some pretty romantic and soulful music from Bollywood - according to me at least.

So click away, listen, judge, scrunch your nose (face - if you're that flexible) and cringe at the compiled list of songs I've soulfully been attempting to sing for the past month.

Saadi Galli Aaja - Nautanki Saala

Mera Mann Kehne Laga - Nautanki Saala

Tum Hi Ho - Arjun feat. Rekha Sawhney

Tum Hi Ho - Aashiqui 2

Title Song - Raanjhanaa

Titli - Chennai Express

Bin Tere - I Hate Luv Storys

Ishq Wala Love - Student of the Year

Won't you keep my dirty little secret?

Saturday, April 27, 2013

Don't you think Josh Dallas is the perfect Prince Charming? I'd like to think so.

(I deeply apologize Rumplestilskin lovers. My materialistic and shallow self likes feast on some eye-candy. Although I must confess that the real Robert Carlyle has an accent to die for)
Out of all the cast members in Once Upon a Time, he is clearly the winning choice. Hands down.

I can't quite place what it is about him that caught my attention. Perhaps we ladies are all prone to some charm, innocence, bravery and above all, the feeling of being cherished?

And come on, there are tons of men who can induce a lust flutter on your insides, but how many can make you feel as though you were resting on a hammock, swinging towards the sunshine? Yeah okay, this one kinda does create little butterflies in my big fat, flabby stomach.

Upon A Hill Across the Blue Lake

Friday, April 05, 2013

It is positively scary at how little I used to care about what I'm studying.

Factoring in all the anger I harbored towards my father for forcing me in to a program of his choice and absolutely hating the idea of crunching numbers for the rest of my life, I forgot to look at the bigger picture.

So the moral of the story today is kids, that when the going gets tough, don't just think of taking the lemons to make lemonade, think of making delicious lemon squares. (For those who aren't accustomed to my shitty analogies, I heartily apologize)

Co-op, despite the tedious work that we're forced to do as interns, does bring things into perspective. In fact, trust me when I say, your life immediately sharpens and focuses. The aperture becomes perfect, the exposure enough for you to gauge whether "yes I can be in this arena for the rest of my life" or "hell no, I need to get outta here" - you'd be kidding yourself if you called your mindset "undecided", I'm sorry that just doesn't happen. You either like it or you don't.

For a person who absolutely hated the idea of engineering and never had the scruple to stop complaining about how boring it is, I love the entire aspect of what a job at Hydro One or any other power utility could lead to. I know, I know. It took me a whopping total of four painstakingly long and expensive years to come to admit that I finally understand why my father gets an extra step to his pace when he talks about cables and transformers (he happens to be one of the lucky few who loves what he does for a living). And it looks like he transferred over his blood to me.

After four years, I am genuinely excited and eager to learn. Yes, you're hearing right. I want to learn, to absorb the knowledge (via osmosis, electromagnetic induction or otherwise) and get working.

Intelligent has officially gained a whole new meaning for me.

Finally.

The Mindy Kalings

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

I have to confess and y'all might hate me for it. I hated Kelly Kapoor in the Office. She was clingy on Ryan, who was an absolute jackass to her, and jabbered on incessantly even when it was apparent to her that no one wanted to listen. Of course, at the time I did not register the significance of a having a brown skinned woman not only acting in the show but also writing for it and clearly being recognized for it - which is why now, even before the long overdue demise of the Office, she has enough talent to launch her own show. T

First of all: WOOOT! Brown-Woman-in-the-Lead-Role Pride.

Second: Non-anorexic, healthy and totally confident woman in lead role.

Third: It's been a while since I've seen Chris Messina on screen - since Julie and Julia :)

Despite its noted shortcomings, I am more than willing (actually desperately hoping) to give this show a chance. Hello, how many times do South Asians make history like this? Not too often, so I say we take a moment and appreciate the fact that Mindy Kaling has made television history. She has broken the mould of a-brown-is-no-more-than-side-kick-of-the-lead by becoming the lead.

Sunday Morning Rush

Sunday, February 10, 2013

There is nothing more spectacular than waking up on a Sunday morning facing a beautiful hue of the sky (trust me when I say that it is akin to a miracle after going through a record-breaking blizzard), fully rested at 10 A.M., basking in the after effect of watching Cairo Time and viewing Lynn Crawford's "Pitchin' In" on Food Network.

It's true what they say, the morning is truly fantastic if one gets a chance to behold it. I feel like working out, running outside despite the chilling weather, cooking myself a hearty breakfast and even clean my room! None of these urges are normal. For me.

I have sincerely lost the ability to write ever since I got my internship, got insanely obsessed over my fitness, and have come home so exhausted from the commute that writing has become the last thing on my mind. Instead I'm frantically fussing over Youtube vidoes of make-up tutorials, scrounging through the Internet for hijabi friendly websites and trying make a routine out of Yoga - and of course trying to find a cheap yoga mat because I do not want to splurge on one from Lulu Lemon given that they are immeasurably overpriced.

If anything, my in-coherency should point to my recent lack of reading literary novels and resorting to chick lits instead. What can I do? They're more addictive than cinnamon candy hearts.

Starships Are Meant to Fly

Saturday, December 29, 2012
Isn't that just the cutest thing ever?

Did not imagine Gabriel Macht's daughter to be soooooo adorable - and blond! But then again, I really can't distinguish Macht from a brunnette or a blonde. I think he probably is too, but this kid seems to have really, really pale hair, unlike daddy dearest. She's sooooooooooooooooo cute!

The lunch conversations at work has gotten baby and marriage obsessed in recent times. I've had to watch a couple of shady and sexy movies to erm, feel 20 again. I feel like that was overdue. Not that I actually looked at the screen when they happened - it was brown style. Averting eyes, whenever something dirty came on. I do not know how people directly watch kissing scenes without blushing. I don't even know how the watch porn, now that would make my whole frigging body blush. Honestly, I might be from this generation but my mindset is clearly fixed firmly in the 18th century when all these things were taboo.

But kids <3!! I so want them. One reason why I can't wait to get married.

Resolutions 2013

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Because this blog seems to get updated every time a deadline is lurking ahead - thus aptly living by the procrastination nation standards - I have come to the conclusion that as early as it may be, it is time to make some solid end-of-the-year resolutions.

As to how far they get followed through, well. We'll see about that. But one thing is for sure. There is no end if there is no beginning. (I'm saying so with the Pirates of Carabbean music soundtrack playing in the background. It has this ability to pump everything to ten times the proportion of big dealness)

So here it goes:
  1. Stop creating my own subset of grammar rules. Even I get annoyed at the random full stops I seem to place in the middle of sentences where it doesn't belong.
  2. Stop sitting on the couch. Couch potatoes are not hot.
  3. Start doing those desk crunchies and chair roll ups at work. And join the gym. Before my butt expands anymore than it has to.
  4. Stop buying makeup for the sake of buying more makeup. Just like staring constantly at the mirror won't make me any prettier/uglier, loading on layers of foundation isn't going to get rid of the blemishes.
  5. Which leads me to the point that I shouldn't bore my eyes into the mirror so many times a day. Like my friend proclaimed with absolute brevity: You're becoming a narcissistic cow, Manal. Dina Tokio, I think we should make a vain cows club where we cows belong.
  6. Stop saying "apeshit" - even though it's cool, it sounds super duper retarded when I say it.
  7. I'll come up with more.

Hiding is Wanting to be Found

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

I know. I know. Egypt is possibly at the brink of another controversial re-election. The people of Gaza are thanking God for every breath they take while people in Bangladesh are holding their breath's to prevent themselves inhaling the fumes that blazed through their GDP - and corrupt officials. Let's not forget that James Bond weapons do exist and that North Koreans might whoop our asses when it comes to lethal leading technological discoveries.

Whereas, here I am, browsing through HSY, Maria B and G+H Photography, soaking up on my daily dosage of gossmakeupartist, Farah Dhukai and the likes - first world problems do seem to put this whole disparity issue quite in focus doesn't it?

And the biggest, fattest, weight-iest question of all:

Masters of Applied Sciences (MASc) or Masters of Engineering (MEng)?

Ah, to be continued. Must go nap to revitalize ranting juice.

God I am in dire need of a vocabulary make-over. I sound like a kindergartener trying to string together words for the first time.

such a lovely place, such a lovely face

Friday, November 09, 2012
I have, over the past tumultuous week, done these:

  • Failed my exam.
  • Threw a hissy fit at least a bajillion times
  • Made a left turn when I wasn't supposed to.
  • Almost crashed the car.
  • Ran three events within the span of one day. Miserably failed at it.
  • Had the worst, not to mention the most ridiculous, thoughts of a person I should have forgotten about years and years ago.
  • Gave a driving test with my bloodstream laced with speed. And now I'm going to go to a wedding where I'm going to be half asleep.
  • I am going to see that person again.
  • Whoopie

Don't know where this picture is from. If it's yours, please let me know.

Party Crashers, Groupie Snatchers

Tuesday, November 06, 2012
The worst aspect about my psychological make-up is that I cannot - under any circumstance, pressure or otherwise - forget. Whether they be events or people.

Volcano face is no longer volcano face although its activities has certainly left permanent imprints on his already hidden face. With hair. I know, I know what you're thinking. Me pay attention to a guy who looks more like a Korean pop idol wannabe and thinks less like the religious man I've always pined for? Certainly the apocalypse isn't here.

Then what could it be?

I blame the wedding bubble. You see, in a wedding no matter how unwelcome its effects and its participants are tend to invade your life anyway, however temporary it might be. Honestly speaking, I never thought that the upcoming wedding would have such an effect on me. It shouldn't. But it is. Just a tiny little bit. Even though I know I shouldn't be swayed, I am. Just a little.

In my defense, these recent feelings (I hate that I'm using this word cause really - it hasn't gone that far as the word usually tends to imply) didn't materialize out of nowhere. I'm perfectly entitled to misunderstandings and I am hard wired to believe that what I'm thinking is merely conjecture or at best hallucinations.

But here it is. There's something fishy going on. Really fishy. Like 8 years haven't happened. Like I'm back in grade 7, except I'm really not. See? I'm already at a loss for words.

I really need to go sleep.

tic tac toe, you're fitting into place

Saturday, April 21, 2012

It turns out that I cannot study no matter how long or how wide I try to keep my eyes apart from each other. Not to mention the recent addiction I've had to the most useless things on the planet which include coding with CSS, XML, "duelling" in pottermore (which I never thought I would ever even log into) and look around in livejournal for icons I'm probably never going to use.

It also turns out, as is blatantly apparent from my background, that I was, am and always will be deeply in love with this template be it expand across livejournal, blogger and if I ever choose to dish $99, wordpress. I believe once a person falls and aligns with certain limitations and guidelines, its hard to shift their choices around to other things. The longer something stays with you, the fonder you get of it...maybe that's why my dad can't bear the thought of leaving the fourth-floor nest he built himself in commemoration of my yester-years. To be honest, I don't see what he sees. The again, as he would say if I ever questioned his logic:

"You're one-third my age, one-eighth of the way through the experience I have been and not even close to have the amount of memories I have"

To which I've always replied:

"Still. I'm one and half centimeters taller than you. Doesn't that give me some credit?"

Alas, no reply to that.

Oh, did I mention how much I love Hum Tum? I do not think I have emphasized, that even today - like 8 years later - I still find Saif's character just as endearing. I should do a whole review on that movie.

As for studying, nada. Zilch. Okay well, control systems doesn't exactly make me wanna jump from my seat but alas, you gotta do what you gotta do. It's hilarious how this realization comes to me at 4:06AM.

the contemporary of the classics

Monday, April 16, 2012

This friend (more like sister with almost the same last name) came up to me - in the recent happiness of her perfect trifecta of success, one of which includes getting hitched - and demanded a playlist that included instrumentals...soulful, ambience-filled music that awakens the "heart". Alright she didn't word it that way, but that's what I heard. And so began my quest of finding music that is classical indian/contemporary - only to come across some real gems. I never thought I would bank for pieces like this, but I think I'm newly in love with Nitin Sahwney, Anoushka Shankar and the sitar. Who would've thought this day would ever come?

Awake || Mungal ft. Nitin Sahwney

Breathing Light || Nitin Sawhney

Slither || Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale

Abyss || Karsh Kale & Anoushka Shankar

Taqasim-Rabee3 (Rendition)|| Farid Atrash

Now let's hope that it works out during the engagement. Else its going to my hair she's going to pluck. One by one.
